LADSON:     Mr. Roy Allen Benton Sr., husband of the late Vernelle “Nellie” Covington Benton, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 2, 2024 at the Trident Medical Center in Charleston.  He was 83. Mr. Benton was born in Walterboro September 18, 1940 a son of the late David S. Benton and Gladys Smoak Benton.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, and retired after thirty-four years of employment as a crane operator with the South Carolina Ports Authority in Charleston.  Mr. Benton was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and he was a talented mechanic and handy man, who could fix anything that was broken.  He will truly be missed. Mr. Benton is survived by his children Allen Benton (Julie), Sharon Benton Kerr (David), and Ben Benton (Tori).  He leaves behind eight grandchildren he adored:  Alaina, Amy, Jacob, Joshua, Sarah, Lydia, Shelby and Caleb.  There is one great-grandchild Adalind, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife and his parents, Mr. Benton was preceded in death by his siblings Mary B. Griffin, D. Belton Benton, and Harriett B. Muse. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday morning, July 6, 2024 at 11:00 at the Bedon Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.   Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
