COLUMBIA: Mark Brian Whittington, beloved husband of Jacqueline “Jackie” Beverly Whittington, passed away Friday morning, December 29, 2023 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia after a brief illness. He was 61.
Mark was born in Columbia December 16, 1962 a son of the late James “Jake” Whittington and Mary Frances Broome Whittington. After graduating from Richland Northeast High School and Midlands Technical College, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he attended Nuclear Power School and served his country honorably as an Electronics Technician and Satellite Communications Specialist. After being honorably discharged, Mark worked for Perelli Cable…which later became CISCO…as an Intercontinental Communications Specialist and Softwear Engineer. He spent time working in Italy and France overseeing various projects for the company. At the time of his passing, he worked for LKQ Manufacturing, where he was responsible for the development of computer programming that focused on the monitoring and support of vehicle transmissions.
Mark was known to his family and friends for his quiet demeanor and his keen intellect. He was fluent in Italian and Latin, and loved spending time analyzing bible scripture and studying biblical archeology. He was a fan of the Nissan Z series cars, and one of his favorite pastimes was working on the engines of the two that he and his wife owned. Mark was a devoted husband and father, and a friend to many. He will truly be missed.
In addition to his wife of 31 years, Mark is survived by his grandson Layne Thomas Whittington, and by two sisters, Susan W. Irwin (Michael) and their daughter Lauren, and Belinda W. Storey (Michael) and their son Gabe. He leaves behind his sisters-in-law Robin B. Stephens (Rudy) and their daughter Nicole, and Marjorie B. Bishop (Craig), as well as a host of extended family he loved dearly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Christian Whittington, and by his brother, James “Bill” Whittington.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, January 4, 2024 at 1:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends immediately following the service. Mark will be interred privately by his late son at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Walterboro. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
