Day Trippin'

Charleston Airshow

Posted

This month’s Daytrippin’ is a trip Joint Base Charleston, otherwise known as the Charleston Airforce Base for this year’s airshow featuring the US Air Force Thunderbirds and numerous other civilian and military aircraft..

The show is one of the best organized shows I have attended with easy and convenient parking and very good crowd and traffic control.

The show hosted over 60,000 patrons over the 2-day events with 45 static aircraft displays and 25 performance aircraft. You could tour aircraft and vehicles, meet pilots ask questions. The show had C-17’s from Charleston, jets from Shaw Airforce Base, a F-35 from Beaufort Marine Corp Air Station, a helicopter from the Coast Guard, and the Dreamlifter from Boeing. In addition to the displays there are plenty of souvenir stands and food vendors to make for a great day at the show.

The show and parking were free and open to the public. Saturday was a beautiful day for flying, and the crowd was treated to the complete airshow. However, Sunday was impacted by weather with only a couple of aircraft performing. The F-35 and the Red Bull Chopper performed, and the Thunderbirds sent an aircraft up at noon to see if they could fly the show. In the interest of safety, the Sunday Flight was cancelled.

If you have not been to an airshow it’s a great way to spend a day. There are a number of shows within driving distance of Walterboro in locations such as Videlia Ga, Warner Robbins Airforce Base, and Marine Corp Airstation Beaufort.
