Walterboro, SC - David "Big David" Sauls, Jr., 97, peacefully entered into the arms of his Creator on November 24, 2023, in Walterboro, SC, surrounded by his cherished family. Born on June 1, 1926, in Smoaks, SC, to the late Eric and May Sauls, David's life exemplified the virtues of humility, gratitude, and a profound respect for all of creation.
David, a man of unwavering faith, honorably served his country as a valiant member of the Merchant Marines. In his selfless service, he displayed a deep reverence for the land, the sea, and the abundant blessings bestowed upon him. Guided by his humility, he carried out his duties with utmost dedication, embodying the spirit of service and sacrifice.
Following his military service, David embarked on a meaningful career with SC Unemployment Office, where he embraced the opportunity to assist and uplift others. His compassionate heart and unwavering commitment to helping those in need left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
Amidst the demands of life, David found solace and nourishment in the simplicity of tending to the land. His hands, calloused by honest toil, lovingly cultivated the earth, honoring the sacred cycle of growth and sustenance. His deep-rooted connection to nature served as a constant reminder of the divine presence in every living thing.
David's faith was the cornerstone of his life, and Smoaks Baptist Church served as his spiritual sanctuary. Within its hallowed walls, he found solace, fellowship, and a profound sense of belonging. His unwavering devotion to his Creator guided his actions, as he humbly treated others with kindness, compassion, and unwavering respect, recognizing the inherent worth in every soul.
David's memory will forever be cherished by his beloved daughter, Cindy Woodward (Tom); his devoted son, David Sauls III; his treasured granddaughter, Tracey Graham (Billy); and his dear caregiver and special friend, Edyce Griffin. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen Sauls, his parents, Eric and May Sauls, and his beloved sisters, Martha Blakewood and Janet McMurray.
A sacred and reverential funeral service will be held at the hallowed grounds of Parker Rhoden Funeral Home on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at 3 pm. In honor of David's life and in keeping with his spirit of gratitude, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Smoaks Baptist Church. These donations will support the church's mission to foster love, compassion, and spiritual growth within the community, a cause dear to David's heart.
