Laurie Charles Sanders, 76, of Edisto Island, passed away Tuesday evening, August 4, 2020, at his home on Edisto Island.  He was born December 9, 1943 in Walterboro, SC.  Mr. Sanders was a son to the late Mr. James Edward  Sanders and the late Mrs. Lucille Bennett Sanders.  He was the loving husband of forty years to Mrs. Sjannah M. Sanders.

Laurie loved his church, Edisto Island United Methodist Church on Edisto Island where he was a good and faithful servant.  He was a member of The United Methodist Men’s Group.  He was raised attending Sandy Dam United Methodist Church in Walterboro where he attended until moving to Edisto Beach.

He was a Federal Civil Service employee having been employed with the U. S. Postal Service, the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Charleston, the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort and the Naval Air Station in Adak, Alaska.  Laurie retired from the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort after returning from Adak, Alaska.   He also worked for the Town of Edisto Beach.   He received numerous awards and citations for his civil service.

Laurie had a passion for working on and restoring old cars, with his special restoration being a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville Catalina Convertible.  He could work on and repair anything he wanted to.  He was a jack of all trades.  He had a passion for gardening, shrimping, boating and his newest hobby of watching and tending the wild deer in his yard.

He loved spending time with his family and friends, trips to the mountains and teaching his granddaughters, Emery and Hollis about gardening.  He always had time for them for golf cart rides and ice cream, yes, he loved ice cream.  He was a Grill Master; he loved the many BBQ’s and cookouts at home and at church.

He made his peace with God and was waiting for his time to take the hand of Jesus and to see the face of God.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: sons, Allen Stanfield (Alison), Laurie C. Sanders, Jr. and Kevin Sanders (Lauren); grandchildren, Emery Stanfield and Hollis Stanfield; and a brother, Sammie T. Sanders.  He was preceded in death by his brothers; James Edward Sanders, Jr., Earl B. Sanders and sisters; Florence S. Hasty, Shirlie S. Lakes, Jackie S. Shaffer, Doris S. Thompson, Eleanor S. Bishop and Alice S. Murdaugh.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 o’clock from the gravesite at Sandy Dam Methodist Church Cemetery, 3422 Charleston Hwy, Walterboro, SC 29488. 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in his memory to: Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Ave, Columbia, SC 29205; Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
