A Colleton County resident escaped from a massive fire that destroyed most of her house.

On June 10, several 911-emergency phone calls alerted Colleton County Fire-Rescue about a house fire in the 400 block of Jonesville Avenue in the Jonesville Community.

Firefighters arrived and found the single-story brick house about 50-percent filled with flames. According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, the fire was coming through the roof and was “running the attic. Crews had the fire contained in about 30 minutes. We were on scene for more than four hours, doing overhaul,” he said.

McRoy said the homeowner was reportedly smoking in a bedroom before the fire, left the bedroom briefly and returned to find the room in flames. The house suffered substantial damage from the fire and from water damage.

The American Red Cross is helping the homeowner with temporary housing and clothing.
