Bystanders ran to aid the man and found him unconscious in the car. An off-duty Firefighter-Paramedic who lives several doors down responded to the accident. With the assistance of the bystanders, the patient was placed on the ground and his respirations were assisted with mechanical means. Medications were administered and additional medications were given when Medic 26 arrived. The patient's condition began to improve and he was transported to Colleton Medical Center. Southbound Jefferies Highway was blocked for over an hour. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
