Accident on Jefferies Highway

An adult male was transported to Colleton Medical Center after his car struck two tractor trailers on Jefferies Hwy. (US Hwy 15) Friday afternoon December 29. The man was driving a Chevrolet Equinox northbound on Jefferies Hwy. when he became unconscious. His vehicle entered the southbound lane with oncoming traffic. Two tractor trailers swerved into the northbound lane to avoid a head-on collision. The Equinox struck the trailer of the first truck, knocking off the rear tires, then side swiped the second trailer before striking the rear wheels. The car came to rest facing north in the southbound lane, blocking southbound traffic. The car received heavy damage to the front and passenger side. Bystanders ran to aid the man and found him unconscious in the car. An off-duty Firefighter-Paramedic who lives several doors down responded to the accident. With the assistance of the bystanders, the patient was placed on the ground and his respirations were assisted with mechanical means. Medications were administered and additional medications were given when Medic 26 arrived. The patient's condition began to improve and he was transported to Colleton Medical Center. Southbound Jefferies Highway was blocked for over an hour. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
