WALTERBORO: Mrs. Ellen Lydia Bryan Strickland Fisk passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, December 20, 2023 at the Pruitt Healthcare Center in Walterboro. She had recently celebrated her 102nd birthday.
Mrs. Fisk was born in Ruffin September 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Josiah Edward Bryan and Ellen Elizabeth Preacher Bryan. During her working years she was employed at Ideal Laundry and Cleaners in Walterboro. She had attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Ruffin her entire life, and was proud of being its oldest member. Mrs. Fisk had been active in the Senior Friends for many years, was a true Christian woman, and was an excellent Southern cook who was known throughout the area for her delicious caramel cakes and squash pies. She was devoted to her family, and will truly be missed.
Mrs. Fisk is survived by her daughter Mary Ellen Strickland Bryan, and by her grandchildren: Kathy Polk (Russell), Louise Groover (Jimmy), Michelle Apt (Kevin), Pam Murdaugh, and Kelli Richardson (King). She leaves behind a host of great and great-great grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Cecilia Strickland, and a devoted friend Hannah Herndon. In addition to her husbands English Woodrow Strickland Sr. and Clevie Fisk, she was preceded in death by three sons, English Woodrow Strickland Jr., James Robert “Bobby” Strickland, and Josiah Perry Strickland, by her son-in-law Mitchell H. Bryan, and by a brother, James Joseph “Joe” Bryan. She was blessed to also have a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, December 23, 2023 at 2:00 at the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Ruffin. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church social hall, and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church.
