Mrs. Martha Bailey DeWitt, 79, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Sunday evening, January 28, 2024, at her daughter’s residence surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Hearl Benjamin DeWitt to whom she was married 56 years.
Born February 5, 1944, in Colleton County, she was a daughter of the late James Woodrow Bailey and Alma Carter Bailey. She worked for many years for Tommie’s in Walterboro where she was the clerk over recycling. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Most of all she loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing.
Surviving are: her daughters, Jennifer DeWitt Dismuke and her husband James of Alabama and Kay DeWitt Avant and her husband Timmy of Walterboro; grandchildren, Amber Sinclair (Steven), T.J. Avant (Whitney), Brandon Avant (Haylei) and Skylar Avant (Josh Myzell); great grandchildren, Bryson, Kaycen, Emma, Caden, Wyatt, Braelyn, Preston, and Hadyn; brother, Lavern Bailey of Rosinville; and sister, Susan Givens Hiott of Islandton. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Zelda DeWitt Hughes; grandson, Rusty Dismuke, Jr.; great granddaughter, Hali Avant; and sisters, Frances B. Meeler and Christine Connelly.
Graveside funeral services were held 3 o’clock, Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Glendale Memorial Cemetery, Walterboro.
