WALTERBORO – Mr. Elwin Bonnie Cleland, 83, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Thursday morning, April 6, 2023, at the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro.  He was the husband of the late Mrs. Martha Fralix Cleland.

Born February 9, 1940, in Walterboro, South Carolina, he was the son of the late James Bonnie Cleland and the late Pernell Violet Hiott Cleland.  Elwin proudly served our country for four years in the United States Air Force.  He then worked for Westvaco in Charleston and retired after thirty-five years of service.   Elwin was devoted to the organizations that he believed strongly in.  He was a member and twice Past Master of Unity Masonic Lodge, No. 55 Ancient Free Masons in Walterboro, where he also had served as Secretary.  He was a member of the Omar Shrine, Scottish Rite – Valley of Charleston, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks – Walterboro Lodge No. 1988.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro. 

Elwin was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish anytime that he could.  He enjoyed staying involved in sports and for many years coached football and baseball teams in Walterboro.   Above all, family was important to him and he loved them all dearly - he was especially proud of his grandsons whom were his whole world.  

Surviving are: his son, Morgan Cleland and his wife, Donna; two grandchildren, Cole Cleland (Katlyn) and David Cleland (Shelby); two sisters, Marilyn Cleland and Judy Hagie (Benny); and a sister-in-law, Betty Fralix Penfield (Jimmie) as well as several nieces and nephews. 

The family would like to thank the Veteran’s Victory House and Patriot Hospice for the unsurpassed care they gave to Mr. Cleland during his time with them.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, April 11, 2023, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.   Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.
