Mr. Roy Allen Bennett, 88 years old, of Walterboro, entered his heavenly home on April 28, 2023. Born September 18, 1934, he was the son of the late John Wesley Bennett and Ethel Craven Bennett. He was the husband of Barbara Ellen Myers Bennett (Bobbie) of Terre Haute, Indiana.

He was known to many as “Rab,” and affectionately known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren. In his early 50’s he trained for the National and World Powerlifting Competition in the Master’s Division in which he won many titles and still retains some of those titles to this day. In 1952 Roy graduated from Walterboro High School. Upon graduating, he served In the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. After his military service, Roy worked on a Construction crew that built the housing for MCAS Laurel Bay Beaufort, South Carolina. He then spent the next 35 years or so working as a Foreman for South Carolina Electric and Gas, which would later become known as SCANNA. He retired in 1999. During his later years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. His joys in life were spending time with his family and watching any golf tournament he could find on television. He lived a long fulfilling and active life.

Roy is survived by his spouse Barbara Ellen Myers Bennett “Bobbie”; a daughter, Robin Bennett of Walterboro; a daughter, Sonja Noskowiak (Chris) of East Tennessee; a daughter, Chrissy Cook (Donnie); a son, Richard Allen Bennett, Sr. of Walterboro; a son, Roy Shayne Bennett (Leslie) of Walterboro; a daughter, Tonda Bennett of Walterboro; Twelve grandchildren; Fifteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Ethel Craven Bennett; his father, John Wesley Bennett; a sister, Thelma Dukes (Pete); a brother, Olin Bennett (Rita); a brother, Thomas Bennett (Margueritte); and a brother, John Bennett, Jr. “JW” (June).

Graveside funeral services were held 2 o’clock, Tuesday afternoon, May 2, 2023, at Weslegacy Cemetery, Walterboro.
