Mrs. Jacqueline Saunders “Jackie” Bennett, widow of the late Winston Graham “Winkie” Bennett, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, October 1, 2024, at Magnolias of Walterboro. She was 87. Born in Walterboro, SC, on April 10, 1937, Jackie was the oldest daughter of the late William Chesley “Bub” and Carrie Murdaugh Saunders. She was a graduate of Walterboro High School and Columbia College. Jackie and Winkie, high school sweethearts, married after college and went on to have three children. After Winkie’s death in 1984, Jackie met Gerald Thomas “Mickey” Ramsey who became her longtime companion until his death in 2010. Jackie was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro and the Will Goodwin Sunday School Class. Jackie loved her church family and in years past enjoyed volunteering with her friends at Bethel’s food pantry. As long as anyone can remember, Jackie loved playing bridge and belonged to a bridge group. She played bridge several times a week with the “Bridge Ladies” as she affectionally called them who were a very special group of women and close friends with a passion for at least getting their dollar back. Up until recently, she was also a member of the Walterboro Elks Lodge #1988 where she loved sharing Wednesday night suppers, spending time with her lifelong friends, and dancing. Jackie was strong, independent, smart, and funny with a great smile and contagious laugh. She had a great sense of humor, loving to cut up with everyone. She never met a stranger and would easily strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She loved gardening or as she liked to say, “pulling weeds and piddling in the yard.” She made the best pound cake and chewies. If you were lucky enough for her to make you one or the other, then you must have been pretty special in her book. While many will remember Jackie as a well-known employee of First Federal Bank of Walterboro or as the “Scrubby Lady” who loved to crochet and sell her handmade scrubbies, her favorite title was that of momma, Mimi, and Granny. Jackie loved her children and grandchildren beyond measure and would tell anyone who would listen how proud she was of each one of them. Surviving are her children, Winston Graham “Binky” Bennett (Tracy) of White Pine, TN, Sonya Bennett Spainhour (Tony) of Edisto Island, SC, and Rebecca Bennett “Becky” Taylor (Niels) of Greenville, SC, and six grandchildren: Robin Shupe-Biggerstaff (Charlie), John-Michael Phillips (Rylee), Winston Graham Bennett III, Sean Wyatt Spainhour (Emily), Robert Bennett Taylor, and Ashton Daniel Taylor; five great grandchildren, Xander, Jillian, and Madison Biggerstaff and Rosie and Hazel Philips, and special family member, Franklin R. Ramsey. In addition to her parents, husband, and longtime companion, she was preceded in death by her sister, Joyce Saunders Haulbrook. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Magnolias of Walterboro, especially Kendall Smith, Arleatha Clark, and Agnes Fraiser, Edisto Home Care and Hospice, and to her Nurse Practitioner, Michelle Spires. You all blessed our sweet momma and her family with such compassionate care and kindness through her struggle with dementia. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 355 Hampton Street, Walterboro, SC, 29488, or to a charity of your choice.
