Willie J. “Bucky” Williams

Posted

This week’s spotlight is on Willie J. Williams also known as “Bucky”. He is the owner of Bucky’s Seafood in Walterboro. Bucky grew up in Walterboro and attended Walterboro High School when they just became the Bulldogs.

Williams moved to New York after high school and got a job cooking in a hospital kitchen. After living in New York and perfecting his cooking, Bucky moved back to Walterboro. He started to buy fish to prepare and sell off the back of pickups and then had the opportunity to open a store after the perspective tenets of a building did not show up and he was able to rent the building to open Williams Seafood.

Bucky’s Seafood is located on Hampton Street, in the old Hill Tire Store, and is across the street from Williams Seafood. Bucky’s opened in October of 2023, the building has a dining room, bar, and an outdoor seating area.

Williams says, “they have a great menu with seafood bowls, crab bowls, shrimp, oysters, and a great selection of soul food. The restaurant is also open for breakfast, serving the standard breakfast item and of course shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits being a best seller.”

Of course, when you finish your meal, don’t forget the dessert. Bucky’s desserts are all homemade, and of course you can order desserts to take home as well.

All the food at Bucky’s is cooked to order with locally purchased ingredients. They do not put food under warmers and serve it fresh of the grill for the best taste.

If you can’t decide on a meal, they also have daily specials.

William’s son Irian works with him at the business. He says he enjoys working with his father. Irian is the chef and has no formal culinary training, he explains, “I just picked it up from all the women that worked in the kitchen at Williams Seafood. We had different cooks and a couple of chefs. I just watched them and learn to cook. My first job was when I was 15.”

Irian adds, “We started with a small menu and no advertising. Like build a kitchen up. Now there’ll be added like on the crab cakes and we’ll start with the pasta dough on the shrimp alfredo.”

Bucky likes to crab in his spare time and fish, but he is spending time working on the restaurant getting the outdoor seating area ready for the summer.

Williams says, “You do not need a reservation to eat at Bucky’s, come on in and we will treat you with open arms.”
