On September 6, 2026, at approximately 5:09 a.m., Colleton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 327 Driggers Lane in Walterboro to assist Colleton County Fire-Rescue with an unresponsive adult male.
The victim’s live-in girlfriend, Jillian Stubenrauch, reported waking up to find him struggling to breathe. According to Stubenrauch, the victim was a paraplegic, and he stopped breathing, prompting her to call for emergency assistance.
Despite resuscitation efforts, the victim could not be revived and was pronounced deceased. The scene was subsequently turned over to the Colleton County Coroner’s Office.
On October 8, 2026, the Colleton County Coroner’s Office notified law enforcement of the toxicology results from the victim’s autopsy, which revealed an extremely high concentration of fentanyl in his system at the time of his death. Investigators determined that Stubenrauch had not disclosed the victim’s drug use or the possibility of an overdose to responding emergency personnel, potentially preventing them from administering Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.
The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division assumed the investigation and subsequently interviewed Stubenrauch. During the interview, detectives learned that Stubenrauch had provided the victim with fentanyl and assisted him in snorting the substance, which she described as being used for pain relief.
On October 9, 2026, Jillian Stubenrauch was arrested and charged with Fentanyl-Induced Homicide. She was denied bond on October 10, 2026, and remains incarcerated at the Colleton County Detention Center.
The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to investigating drug-related deaths and holding individuals accountable when evidence supports criminal charges.
