Veterans and local official all came out on a cold Saturday morning, January 24th, to break ground for the new Veterans Park at the Lowcountry Regional Airport. The new park, which is located adjacent to the Tuskegee Airman Memorial Park, will include a pavillion area and restrooms with ample outdoor space to hold events. Nathan Knox with the DAV opened the event with Rev. Bernard Gethers presenting the opening prayer. Walterboro Mayor Broderick and County Council Chairman Scott Biering both spoke at the event. Also represented at the event were the American Legion, the VFW, DAV, and the Tuskegee Aimen. All members of Colleton County Council along with the County Administrator Thomas Higgs and Deputy County Administrator Meredith Wright, and officials from the airport also attended the event. Johnny Holmes led the groundbreaking and was presented with the ceremonial shovel as dignitaries in attendance dug the first scoop of dirt. The park is a one cents sales tax funded project with Wildwood Contractors doing the construction.
