The Irene Hugine Education Foundation

The Irene Hugine Scholarship Program began in 1987. The program is named in honor of Irene Hugine who taught in the public schools of Colleton County for 37 years. Additionally, she was very active in her church, Jerusalem AME, now White Hall AME, as a class leader, president of the missionary society, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Steward Board and choir. In the community she was a member of Colleton County NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women and Worthy Matron of White Hall Chapter NO. 13, order of the Eastern Stars. She was married to Rev. Andrew Hugine, Sr.

Upon her death, her friends, family members, and former students made contributions to establish the Irene Hugine Scholarship Program. The Program annually provides scholarship to students in the lower Colleton County and continuing support for students at White Hall AME that are pursing postsecondary education. In 2025, the Scholarship Program began a 501 (c)(3) Foundation.

On July 25, 2026, the organization will be celebrating the 40th Scholarship Program with a banquet at the Green Pond Community Center, 371 Ivenia Brown Road, Green Pond, South Carolina. The public is invited and additional banquet information will be forthcoming.

The past recipients of the scholarship program are listed below. The Program is especially interested in their attendance at this celebration. Additionally, we want to include them with their recent information in the program.
