The Technical College of the Lowcountry and Colleton County Adult Learning Center held an orientation for citizens of Colleton County on March 11th. Participants signed up, heard presentations, and were able to ask question of program representatives, Chris Horvath, Antonia Cook and Phillip Taylor.

The program allows participants to achieve professional certifications in various subjects including Phlebotomy, Electronic Health Records Specialist, Medical Scribe Specialist, Pharmacy Technician, and numerous other courses.

The courses are fully funded and available to residents of South Carolina. The courses started in April with more starting in June at the Colleton County/TCL Adult Learning Center in Walterboro. There are also courses available online.

Phillip Taylor, The Workforce Solutions Manager for the Technical College of the Lowcountry Walterboro Campus says the response is going quite well, “It looks like we might end up having some waiting lists for some courses because I could only put 12 in a class. We already have the class full that starts tomorrow. In two weeks’, time, we were able to fill up a class and make it available. We got a waiting list for that class.”

Taylor adds, “We have additional classes coming up with like Phlebotomy, pharmacy, tech, we still have the CompTIA classes. There’s a myriad of courses starting soon.”

The facility also has computers on site to use for online classes, “If people need access to our computers and our technology, they can come use this site. It’s available to them. Students that feel like they have a very secure Wi-Fi or internet capabilities and a very good computer, then maybe it’s an option for them to do their courses at home.

Taylors is happy with the turnout, “We have had about 86 people that have already gotten certifications in the Colleton County area, that’s good for a soft opening, we wanted to have a first of its kind of orientation registration, which we’re doing tonight, I think we have a pretty good turnout, and a lot of activity. It’s been good to see people up their skills and certifications.”
