Spotlight – Tara Boswell

This Month’s Spotlight is Tara Boswell, a USC- Salk graduate and Yoga instructor at the University of South Carolina – Salkehatchie. She is a native of Hampton County, living on a farm outside of Yemassee in a little community called Cummings. Boswell began teaching Yoga at the University after Jane Brewer approached her about teaching a class while Boswell’s son was attending the University.

Boswell described her class, “We do just basic therapeutic movement, which includes stretching, strength, building balance, just all the things that’s great for your body. I have wonderful students to help me out.” Her classes cater to a diverse age range, from students to those in their 80s. Participation varies; for those 60 and over, it’s free, while degree-seeking students pay tuition for a one-hour credit. She adds, “We just do one style of yoga, Hatha Yoga, which is the foundational type yoga, and so it includes strength building, a little cardio, balance, stretching, and all the main components of yoga.”

Boswell stress that anyone can participate in the class, “So we have students that are actually enrolled here for a degree, and then we have students all the way into their 80s. They have to be enrolled in the university. It’s a free class for anybody that’s is over 60, but it is one hour credit, and so all you have to do is check with admissions and you can be enrolled.”

Boswell adds, “ Yoga is therapeutic movement, and good for your body. It stretches your body, it builds stamina, it’s breath work, which helps you on a daily basis. It helps you navigate life, through all the business, the tension and all the things that take place in life. It lowers your blood pressure, it strengthens your bones. It does it all.”
