One man was critically injured and a second man died from injuries received in a single-vehicle accident in the 2500 block of Possum Corner Road on Sunday June 7 at 6 a.m.

The two were traveling southbound on Possum Corner Road in a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria when the car dropped off of the shoulder in the 2500 block. The driver overcorrected and the car slid sideways into a large pine tree, causing heavy damage to the passenger side. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt.

Cedric Varner, 36, of Walterboro received multiple traumatic injuries and was found unconscious in the car. Firefighter-paramedics began treating him in the vehicle and called for a medical helicopter. He was quickly freed and moved to an ambulance. However, the man went into cardiac arrest shortly after leaving the scene and the ambulance diverted to Colleton Medical Center.

Crews diligently worked to resuscitate the man and regained pulses enroute to the emergency department, but unfortunately, he did not survive.

The 29-year-old man was found semi-conscious and also suffered multiple traumatic injuries. He was treated at the scene, then rapidly transported by ambulance to a field to meet with the CARE Flight helicopter and flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC.

Possum Corner Road was closed for over four hours while the S.C. Highway Patrol conducted its investigation.
