WALTERBORO – Mrs. Vera Jones Newington, age 99, of Walterboro, entered into rest Thursday evening, September 17, 2026, at Magnolias of Walterboro. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Duane Edwin Newington.
Born June 22, 1927, at the Parsonage of her father’s church in Hickory Corners, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Reverend Victor E. Jones and the late Mrs. E. Luella Trowbridge Jones. She worked for the Secretary of State in Michigan, having worked in the Kalamazo office. For that agency, she began as a secretary and eventually became driving test administrator. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro, where she was a member of the Lula Strickland Circle and the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Vera was an avid Bingo player and was an expert shopper who always exhibited the best in style and fashion.
Surviving are: five children, Sandra Katchuk (Michael) of Walterboro, and Sally LaGrow, Edwin Newington(Marlene), Terry Newington (Sally), and Douglas Newington, all of Michigan; a brother, Roland Jones (Patricia); and a host of fifteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held 11 o’clock Friday morning, September 25, 2026, from Bethel United Methodist Church, Walterboro. Entombment followed in Glendale Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Walterboro.
