The Alec Murdaugh murder case that rocked the nation returned to court at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 29, with a status conference. The hour-long hearing was the first step involving the once-prominent Lowcountry lawyer toward his retrial.
This was Murdaugh’s first court appearance since the state Supreme Court overturned his guilty conviction in May of 2026, after finding that former Colleton County Court Clerk Becky Hill pleading guilty to interfering with the 2023 murder trial meant that Murdaugh deserved a new trial. Hill pled guilty to state charges of misconduct in office, obstruction of justice, and perjury. She was sentenced to three years of probation and 100 hours of community service.
Judge Debra McCaslin has scheduled Murdaugh’s next court hearing for Aug. 14 and is looking toward an April 5, 2027, trial date. This will be solidified at a later date depending on pretrial hearings, motions, and evidentiary updates. The defense has requested independent retesting of DNA found underneath Maggie Murdaugh’s fingernails, which could take at least six months. Earlier, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) indicated the DNA belonged to an unknown white male.
Attorneys for Murdaugh have also indicated that they expect to introduce new evidence in the case.
The defense also requested that Murdaugh have access to a laptop in his prison cell to be able to review case materials. The judge denied the request, stating that she already called the warden with the SC Department of Corrections, and Murdaugh will not be allowed a laptop for safety reasons; but the prison would make available a conference room so attorneys or paralegals can come to discuss the case. This will require that someone be with Murdaugh at all times.
The Murdaugh attorney, Dick Harpootlian, has also requested that Murdaugh not be shackled or in a jumpsuit for the trial since his double murder conviction was overturned. The judge says she will make a ruling on that in the future.
The defense has also asked for a change of venue (trial location) for the new trial, and has asked the prosecution to work with the defense to suggest a suitable location.
