More rural recreation is needed

There has been a lot of talk about the needs of Colleton County. Mostly, these discussions are happening within our planning committees and by our elected leaders on Colleton County Council and on Walterboro City Council.

Among those needs as listed as most urgent are housing opportunities and water improvements. Yes, these are important. We are also asking our leaders to give attention to another need that is being discussed – recreational improvements.

Colleton County is known for its recreation. Outdoor recreational sports and environmental recreation, like canoeing and kayaking and fishing, are a key part of living in the Lowcountry. In our talks about future planned growth and development in Colleton, we need to be including more recreational complexes in rural Colleton County. Our primary recreational hub in Walterboro is a gem in Colleton’s crown, so to speak. Yet, we need more of these recreational complexes in our rural parts of the county: smaller complexes like these, that include a baseball field with bleachers, playground equipment and a basketball court, should be included in recreational planning, and should be strategically placed in Lodge and Green Pond. County funding is typically streamed to Cottageville for their park improvements, and more of that should also continue.

Our environmental recreation, like fishing, should also be maintained. We, as a county, typically do a good job of maintaining our boat landings; however, in future planning efforts, we believe more public fishing piers should be added to some of our boat landings.

As we grow, we want to maintain our way of life. We can do this by focusing on the parts of our culture that are important to us and planning to improve on those with future funds and in future development strategies.
