The Memorial Day Ceremony sponsored by the Colleton County Veterans Council, was held May 25, 2026, in Walterboro. The skies cleared for a beautiful lowcountry morning as dozens of Colletonians gathered at the War Memorial, on Washington Street, to honor its Veterans. Bob Tiegs, Treasurer of the Colleton County Veterans Council was the Master of Ceremony. The invocation was given by June Day, President of American Legion Auxiliary Post 93. The Presentation of Colors was presented by the Colleton County High School NJROTC and Mr. Jeremiyah Karal sang the National Anthem. Mayor James Broaderick and County Council Chairperson Scott Biering welcomed those who attended. Mr. Tiegs acknowledged dignitaries present including all members of Colleton County Council and a representative from Senator Tim Scott’s office. The ceremony then honored the POW and MIAs. The Keynote Speaker was Art Williams, President of the Hiram E. Mann Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee Airmen trained the Walterboro Army Airfield during World War II. The Colleton County Veterans Council laid the Memorial Wreath in honor of those in the Armed Services that died for our country. A three round volley was presented by the Colleton County Honor Guard along with the playing of TAPS. The ceremony wrapped up with remarks and a Benediction by Nathaniel Knox, Chairman of the Colleton County Veterans Council.
The Veterans Council also reminded attendees that Memorial Bricks are also still available for the new Veterans Park being constructed at the Lowcountry Airport. Order Forms can be found online an at the Press and Standard office to acquire a brick to honor your Veteran. Bricks are still available at the entrance plaza with future brick being located in other locations around the park.
