A Charleston man died after apparently jumping from a moving Amtrak train on Sunday Jan. 26.

At 9:37 p.m., Fire-Rescue units and Colleton County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the area of Wiess Lane at the railroad tracks north of the Green Pond Community.

CSX authorities notified Colleton 9-1-1 that a male passenger on an Amtrak train reportedly jumped off of the train in Colleton County between that location and the Edisto River. CSX said the passenger allegedly caused a disturbance and was acting strangely. When they returned to check on him, they only found his hat near an open side door.

Emergency personnel began searching the area as CSX called back and reported another train reported seeing a shoe between the tracks near Hope Plantation Lane in Jacksonboro.

Units relocated to the Jacksonboro Community, six miles south of Wiess Lane, and began walking the railroad tracks in both directions.

The sheriff’s office deployed a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera and located the man’s body approximately a half mile south of the Hope Plantation Lane crossing.

The coroner’s office was notified and Coroner Richard Harvey responded to the scene.

Nathaniel Callahan, 38, of Charleston died at the scene.

CSX law enforcement is investigating the man’s death.
