Jessica Williams looks back on CCSD accomplishments

The Press and Standard sat down with recently retired Superintendent of Schools for the Colleton County School District, Jessica Williams. Mrs. Williams outlined the successes and accomplishments the district achieved during her time as superintendent. Mrs. Williams came into the role of superintendent facing an extraordinary challenge. The Colleton County School District was on the list of schools to be taken over by the state. As superintendent, Williams was tasked with leading the school district off the list and into success. The State of South Carolina provided the template to bring the district back from the brink, but it was up to CCSD leadership to come up with the plan. As Mrs. Williams reflects, “Leadership is never about one person; it is about people coming together with a shared vision for children. I am grateful for what we accomplished together as a school district family.” She credits God for the opportunities placed to help achieve the district goals, the turnaround teams for the district and the schools, and all the CCSD staff that stepped up to the plate and said, “Yes we can do this. We can turn where we are around.”

The three main goals of the plan were to improve academic achievement, increase stakeholder involvement, and improving the culture and climate (morale) at our schools. The school report card that came out showed not only improvement, but great strides in improvement for the district. Mrs. Williams took the time to outline the achievements of the district during her tenure as superintendent that led to this substantial improvement while working and focusing on these goals:

• Led the district through a period of historic academic growth

• Helped move the district awa from state takeover concerns by improving accountability and overall district performance

• Achieved one of the highest growth rankings in ELA in the state.

• Achieved a balanced budget while continuing to invest in student achievement, staff support, and school improvement

• Strengthened the culture and climate across the district

• Expanded opportunities for students through Career Technical Education, extracurricular programs, and academic initiatives.

• The Colleton County School District’s Mission Statement is to prepare every student with a 21st century education to be globally competitive in their chose college and/or career path. “I am excited that we are able to make our mission statement a reality through academics and the integration of Career and Technical Education for our students.”

• New CTE classes include completing the institution of Barbering and Nail Tech. Collaborated with local officials to institute a new Law Enforcement class that will begin in the fall of the 2026-2027 school year.

• Focused on creating safe, supportive, and student-centered learning environments.

Built strong relationships with families, community partners, faith-based organizations and local stakeholder.

• Worked to recruit, support, and recognize outstanding teacher, principals, and staff members through our “Above and Beyond” initiative.

• Helped position the district for continued success long after my retirement.

Mrs. Jessica Williams has served the community through her efforts in the Colleton County School District. “As I close this chapter, my heart is full or gratitude. The greatest investment we can ever make is in the lives of children, and I will always be grateful to have served this district, this community, and the students who represent our future. Leave every place better than you found it. I believe together, we did just that.”
