Colleton Preparatory Academy on the diamond

The CPA Warhawks have been working hard so far this season and Vernon Gilbert, Sports Contributor and Video Producer, caught up with the head coach and some of the players of this year’s team to get their take on the season for far.

Coach Joe Hill is the varsity boys’ baseball coach at CPA. He has been coaching baseball for 15 years, and this is his first year at Colleton Prep. Currently the Warhawks are 10 and 7 on the season. “We’ve won some really good games, and lost a couple of bad games,” Hill

comments. “I would like to see us win way more of those close games that we’ve played. We are a young team at Colleton Prep, and the future is bright for the next 10 years here.” Coach Hill also thanked the administration at CPA, the assistant coaches, the sponsors, and the fans. “We’ve had really good turnout to every single home baseball game, and I’d like to give my thanks to the fans for their support.”

Sophomore Fripp Smoak is the catcher and plays center field and is making a big noise for CPA in the 2026 season. “Last week we had a good team win against St. John’s Christian Academy 18-1. "[We’ve had] a few rough weeks of region play. We have good momentum

going into the end of the season towards the playoffs. The pitchers have been pitching well, and the defense has been playing well. We had a few rough games, but we bounced back. We’ve done better at the plate than we did at the beginning of the season. Overall, it’s been a better season than last year.

Junior Charlie Walker #5 is flying under the radar, but not for long. The junior outfielder is starting to turn heads for CPA this season with his speed, range, and ability to make plays when it matters most. Walker also talked about the teams win over St. John’s. “I thought we

hit the ball very well. Our pitchers threw strikes, and our defense backed us up. I’d like to give a shout out to our coaches, my family, and everyone that has supported me this year.”

Junior Cale Owens #1 may not say much, but his game definitely does. The second baseman has been putting in work for CPA, showing consistency in the field and at the plate. “We had a good away win 18-1 with no errors, and it was just a good team win all around.”
