A Picture of Mercy and Grace

Reading the Bible through with me? Then grab your pen and journal and read 2 Samuel 7-9. No one names their kid Mephibosheth anymore. But if ever there was an Old Testament picture of mercy and grace, it is in David’s treatment of Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth.

Traditionally, when a rival ascended to a throne, he would execute any remaining family members of the previous King. This would remove any challenges to the throne. But because of his great love for Jonathan, David sought out any remaining member of Saul’s family to whom he could show kindness. Mephibosheth was living in Lo-debar, a place for which the name means “barren.” He was hiding in a waste land hoping to avoid detection. His location was discovered, and the king dispatched soldiers to get him. I am sure it was an unnerving experience for Mephibosheth. Knowing that he was the sole survivor of King Saul’s line, I am sure he thought his death was imminent. David had him brought to the palace where Mephibosheth humbled himself and responded with submission to David’s greeting. David said, “Do not be afraid! I intend to show kindness to you because of my promise to your father, Jonathan.” He then restored all of Saul’s property to Mephibosheth and then promised that from that day forward, he would eat at the king’s table as a family member.

Such a beautiful allusion to Yahweh’s love for us. He sent His only Son to seek us out, deliver us from spiritual death, and allow us to feast at the King’s table. But it requires a humble submission, an acknowledgement of our own brokenness, and a willingness to accept the gift. Have you responded to God’s invitation to be set free from the barrenness in your life and to enjoy the fellowship of the King’s table?
