Mother’s Prayers

Posted

There is a special song, “Mother’s Prayers Have Followed Me” by Lizzie DeArmond, that we sang in my church annually for Mother’s Day when I was a young girl. I loved the beautiful tune so much, but I did not realize what the lyrics meant until years later. The words of this Mother’s Day song are a reflection of the following Scripture: “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well” (2 Timothy 1:5 ESV). The lyrics show just how a mother who truly knows the Lord will always pray for her children, no matter the situation. The child in the song “ran away” from his foundation and lived far from God. One day he realized that it was his mother’s prayers that got him through his wretched life, and he finally turned back to a life in Christ.

A Christian mother knows her children are a blessing from the Lord, so when she needs guidance in dealing with or praying for them, it is only to God that she can turn. Even if her children may go astray, they will one day return to that foundation that she and the Lord laid for them. However, children must learn that they cannot always just depend on Momma’s prayers because she is not going to be around forever.

There are all kinds of power on earth, but none will ever outweigh the power of a praying mother. Throughout my life as a mother, there are numerous times that our children have called and asked me to pray for something specific for them. Please take the time to meditate on and share the lyrics of “Mother’s Prayers Have Followed Me.” I have included two of the stanzas and the refrain.

I grieved my Lord from day to day, / I scorned His love so full and free, And though I wandered far away, / My mother’s prayers have followed me. Refrain: I’m coming home, I’m coming home, / To live my wasted life anew, For mother’s prayers have followed me, / Have followed me the whole world through. He turned my darkness into light, / This blessed Christ of Calvary! I’ll praise His name both day and night, / That mother’s prayers have followed me.

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and mot
