The Colleton Prep War Hawk soccer team dropped contests against Hilton Head Christian (2-0) and John Paul II (8-0) last week. The War Hawks are currently 0-11 overall.

The War Hawks hosted Hilton Head Christian on March 28th, managing to hold them 1-0 until the final 10 minutes of the game. “We lost 2-0, but the boys played their best game so far of the season,” said Head Coach Andrew Floresca. “The first goal was off a corner kick where Hilton Head Christian played it on the ground to one of his teammates inside of the 18-yard box. From there, it was a good individual effort by the Hilton Head Christian player, and bad defending by two of our players, that allowed him an opportunity to tap a goal in at the 6-yard box.

“There was 30 seconds left in the half when this happened, and we could have easily gone into halftime with a tied score. The second goal was in the last 10 minutes of the game on another corner kick where our defender missed his mark on the back post,” he said.

Against top-ranked John Paul II on March 30, the War Hawks were outmatched by experience.

“John Paul II is ranked No. 3 in the state with their only loss this season coming to Bluffton High School (2-1),” said Floresca. “Bluffton High School is one of the best AAAA schools in the state. John Paul II had several guys that started out playing soccer at a young age and the individual skill difference between our two teams was easy to spot. However, we were able to connect several passes towards the end and had three or four meaningful goal scoring opportunities created by the midfield. A few were barely saved by their keeper, while one deflected off the post.

“We still need to work on our first touch and switching the field of attack, but we are definitely seeing progress.”
