The Walterboro Lions Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 12 at 1:00 PM at Dukes Bar B Que. Ray Colson opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by prayer.
Bob Pence, Chairman of Walterboro Lions Club Scholarship Committee, introduced Tommy O’Quinn one of this year’s scholarship recipients and his parents John and Melissa of Ruffin. Tommy, an Eagle Scout, is a graduate of Andrew Jackson Academy and will be attending Erskine College in the fall in premed. His ambition is to attend MUSC and practice medicine as a small-town doctor. A second scholarship recipient is Alexandria Nicole Stephens who was not able to attend. Ms. Stephens plans to study Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of South Carolina.
The scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is given each year to a Colleton County resident. A major focus of the scholarship is to support students who plan a career of service. After the introduction of Tommy, the election of officers for 2024 to 2026 was conducted by Mike Kuszmaul. Their installation will be conducted at our next meeting on July 10.
There was a brief discussion of ways to grow the membership of the club. The club at one time had around 75 members. But due to death, moving, and COVID the number has decreased to around 12. There was a general feeling that many people are not aware of the club and its service to the community with a focus on the blind and visually impaired. The inclusion of articles in the paper and other publicity may help increase awareness and community support.
