This week’s Spotlight features Sonya Grooms. Most of you may know from behind the lighting board at the Colleton Civic Center. She can also be found participating in choir or directing the television broadcast at First Baptist Church.

Sonya is originally from Georgetown SC but moved to the lowcountry after college. Living in Walterboro with her husband Scott, she transports papers for the Press and Standard and has worked in live production and media for almost 30 years.

A part of working in live production is also leads into her hobbies. She likes to travel around the country to see interesting places, traveling backroads, eating in local restaurants and visiting antique stores. While traveling Sonya loves concerts, with artists such as Neil McCoy, Billy Dean and Clint Black being amongst her favorites.

Other favorites places to travel are Branson, Missouri, The Ozark Mountains, Myrtle Beach, home of her favorite roller coaster the Swamp Fox at Family Kingdom. For longer trips she likes Amtrak, especially the bullet train, with trips to Boston and New York being her favorites.

She also likes to travel to IndyCar Racing events with Scott Dixon being her favorite driver. She has been to events in Virginia, Texas, Iowa, Kentucky and Indianapolis.

When asked what she would love the do she said, “I would love to go to England and Paris, and Climb the Eiffel Tower.
