Colleton and Dorchester Fire-Rescue responded to a fatal vehicle accident on I-95 near the 69 mile marker Southbound May 23 at 1:29 pm. A semi- truck struck the guard rail then the bridge abutment before going over the bridge and overturning in the riverbed. The truck received heavy damage and caught fire impinging on the bridge. The accident occurred near the Colleton/Dorchester County line. CCFR units assisted Dorchester County units. The fire was quickly extinguished, and the truck driver was located trapped in the wreckage. Tragically, the driver succumbed to their injuries. South bound traffic was blocked for several hours until the accident could be cleared and SCDOT inspected the bridge.
