Sports Contributor and Video Producer Vernon Gilbert, spoke with athletes from the Colleton Preparatory Academy Track and Field team about their favorite events and accomplishments during this year’s season.
Bradley Harrison is in 9th grade, and this is his second year in Track and Field. He also runs Cross County under the direction of Coach George Smith. He started out running the 800 meters, the mile, and some relays, but he discovered his best event was the triple jump. Harrison reveals that he is not much of a runner, but he loves the triple jump. He has seen improvement throughout the season. His early jumps were in the low 10s (meters). Now he
is jumping a little over 11 meters. Harrison has set a goal for 38 feet (11.4 meters) for this season. Bradley gives a shout out to Coach Smith for helping to get him to where he is now.
Brady Bishop is versatile in his running events. At 8th grade he runs the 200, 400, 800, and 1600. This year Bishop participated in the Rice Run and placed 5th out of approximately 190 runners. He admitted the Rice Run was a difficult because it was his first 5K, but he still ran very well. He received a trophy for coming in first in his age group. Bishop’s favorite run in Track and Field is the 1600. He always did the best in this event, and it came easily to him. He did not start in the 1600 immediately, he moved up through the
events before he landed on his preferred run. This is Bishop’s first year in Track and Field, and he is marking steady improvement in his events. His main goal is to improve as much as possible this season. Brady does have his eye on taking his running career farther than high school. Bishop gave a shout out to Coach Smith for helping him his first year in this sport.
Cameron Kinard, one of the youngest on the CPA team, has a bright future in Track & Field. She has already made a big impression making State this season. Her start in this sport was based on a suggestion that she should try it because her parents thought she would do well in running. It turns out they were right. Kinard recalls her first day practicing. She comments,
“it was tough, but I made it.” Asked what kind of advice she would give to someone looking to get into running, Kinard comments hydration is a must, practice is also key, and to keep a positive attitude and keep on trying.” Right now, her favorite run is the two mile run. She enjoys this distance and finds the runs come easily to her. Kinard also gives credit to Coach Smith for all his help.
