Two Colleton County men died on impact in a recent crash along Ritter Road in Colleton County.

The crash occurred at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5th on Ritter Road near Tall Tree Lane. Two cars were involved – a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis and a 2004 Toyota Solara. According to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell with the S.C. Highway Patrol, the Toyota was headed north on Ritter Road when it crossed the center lane and struck the Mercury head-on. The Toyota then caught fire.

Both drivers of the cars were killed instantly, said Tidwell.

The deceased drivers are identified as Marquay Brown, 30, of Yemassee, and Jamal Ferguson, 30, also of Yemassee, according to Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey.

The drivers were the only occupants in both cars.

“The high-speed impact caused heavy damage to both passenger cars. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt,” said Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy.

According to McRoy, a 17-year-old passerby stopped and extinguished the fire prior to the arrival of fire-rescue units. The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
