The local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution chose two local students to receive Good Citizen awards and scholarships.

Colleton County High School senior Zora Jamison and Colleton Prep senior Jacob Breland were selected for this honor.

As a recipient of the Colonel Joseph Glover Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award, Jamison will receive a Good Citizens pin, a certificate and a check for $100 to assist with educational expenses after graduation.

Zora Jamison

A senior at Colleton County High School, Jamison is the daughter of Lakeesha Lawton of Lodge. She has been a member of the National Honor Society from 2019 to the present and has served as secretary of the National Honor Society from 2020 to the present. She served on her school’s Yearbook Committee from 2018 to 2019 and she was a member of the Colleton County High School Marching Band from 2016 to 2018. Additionally, she was a member of the Cougar Basketball Team from 2017 to 2020. Throughout high school, she volunteered at the LDF School of Nursing for their community dinner and she volunteered for Christmas in October events. She also volunteered at the Ruffin Community Center, where she helped with Halloween events for children. Her community service also includes her assisting with games at Hendersonville Elementary School’s Field Day.

This year, COVID-19 did not permit physically volunteering, but Jamison has virtually tutored students during the pandemic.

She said she plans on earning her bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and then continue on to medical school. Her ultimate career goal is to become a neurologist. She has not decided which university she will attend in the fall.

Jacob Breland

Jacob Breland is the other recipient of the Colonel Joseph Glover Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award. He will receive a Good Citizens pin, a certificate and a check for $100 to assist with educational expenses after graduation.

A senior at Colleton Preparatory Academy, Breland is the son of Richard and Lisa Breland of Walterboro. He has served as Student Government Treasurer, Class of 2021 Treasurer, Varsity Football Team Captain, and Yearbook Club Editor.

He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has served as Treasurer and Student Pastor.

Breland is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Varsity Basketball team.

In the community, he has been a member of the Walterboro United Methodist Youth Group, a member of Ashton Baptist Church, and a staff member of “In His Name” Homeless Shelter. He has also been employed by Benton’s Boiled Peanuts and Breland Hill Farms.

As a member of the Walterboro United Methodist Youth Group, Breland helped set up and operate games for the Fall Festival and assisted with Christmas preparations.

He said he plans to attend either Clemson or Auburn University in the fall.
