One home was destroyed and two others were damaged in a recent fire.

The Feb. 15th fire occurred in the 900-block of Drew Hill Court, near Walterboro. According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, a homeowner dumped ashes from a fireplace onto a debris pile in the yard. Those smoldering ashes then ignited nearby dry grass, and the flames spread across the yard to her doublewide mobile home.

The same fire also spread to a nearby singlewide mobile home and to a third mobile home on the property. McRoy said the homeowner “heard the noise” of the fire, and then discovered that the singlewide mobile home was filled with flames. She then called 911, he said.

When firefighters arrived, they found the singlewide fully involved.

“Firefighters deployed multiple hand lines, first protecting the doublewide and then working to extinguish the singlewide,” said McRoy. “Crews deployed additional hand lines to a second singlewide mobile home, which had started burning from radiant heat,” he said.

“The second singlewide had a metal exterior and the heat ignited the wooden studs inside the walls.”

Firefighters removed siding from the mobile home to reach the flames and extinguish the fire.

One of the homes was completely destroyed. The other two sustained minor structural damage.

No one was injured in the fire.

In all, firefighters were on scene for about three hours.
