The Letter and the Spirit

Are you reading the Bible through with me? Grab your pen and journal, and get ready to write your thoughts as you journey through the Bible.

Today read Deuteronomy 29-31. Make note of 30:14-17. Yahweh calls us to keep His commands. He reminds us in that His desires are not hidden from us.

Paul refers to this passage in Romans 10:5-8. Perhaps the biggest issue for us is whether we have the resolve to obey. Lest you think that Jesus changed the obedience expectation, check out John 14:15 and John 15:10. Remember, Yeshua (Jesus) spoke all the commands of the Old Testament as part of the Trinity.

The Old Testament contains three types of laws. There is some overlap, but most are rather distinct.

Ceremonial laws are called “chuqqah” in Hebrew. The word means “custom of the nation” and is usually translated as statutes. These laws pertained to feasts, sacrifices, and other ceremonial regulations These laws do not pertain to the New Testament Church.

Civil laws were the laws primarily given in Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These are the laws which Jesus fulfilled (Romans 10:4). His fulfillment means that salvation was no longer the result of good works. It is only found in the perfect work of the Lord Jesus as the once for all Sacrifice for sins. (2 Peter 3:18)

Moral laws are called “mishpatim” in Hebrew, usually translated as ordinances. These ordinances are based on the holiness of God and are, therefore, righteous and eternal. They were given to protect the welfare of God’s people. Moral laws regulate sexual conduct, interpersonal relationships, and the essentials for justice rendered by government. Since Jesus is the fulfillment of the law, we no longer Old Testament laws that say we must execute adulterers, homosexuals, mediums/witches, idolaters, or those who are disobedient to their parents. Instead, they are our mission field! So, “let your light shine before (them) that they might see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

In your journal, write a list of people who have lifestyles different from your own. Take time to pray over each one.

PRAY: Lord, when I am confronted by those who reject the Old Testament as irrelevant or those who believe that the moral laws that You have given are irrelevant, help me to be firm and loving in my response while holding to the Truth.
