The Day the Sun Stood Still

Are you reading the Bible through with me? Grab your pen and journal, and get ready to write your thoughts as you journey through the Bible.

Have you ever needed a miracle?

Miracles still happen these days, but they occur in God’s timing, in His will and with a righteous heart.

Today our reading comes from Joshua 10-12.

In Joshua 10:12-14, there is a recorded event that most believe was impossible.

“On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’ 13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies.”

Joshua’s faith in the Lord was so strong, that when he asked for the sun to stand still so the Israelite army could defeat their enemies, he believed that God would do what he asked and make the sun stop.

Was this impossible?

In Genesis 18:14, Yahweh said to Abraham, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” And Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With God, all things are possible.” So why should it be surprising or unreasonable that when Joshua sought the Lord’s counsel, he could then speak as directed and the sun would stop in its place for nearly 24 hours. This miracle occurred because of four truths:

1) Israel’s enemies were also God’s enemies.

2) The miracle was God’s will, done God’s way, in God’s time.

3) God did His part, but Joshua and his army still had to do their part.

4) This miracle was a result of Joshua’s intimacy with God.

So, if you need a miracle, ask yourself if your request follows God’s principles.

In your journal, write these questions and answer them honestly:

Is what or whom I identify as my enemy really an enemy of God?

Am I striving to speak and act accordingly to God’s will and direction?

Am I doing MY part in my situation?

Is my prayer life deep, intimate and in tune with the still small voice of God?

If you answered all these questions with a firm “Yes,” then ask for what seems impossible or improbable. Our God is still the God of miracles.

PRAY: El Shaddai, my all-sufficient God, I trust You. Strengthen me when my faith is weak for You are the God of miracles.
