Structure Fire on Cottageville Highway

Posted

A garage/workshop approximately 40’ x 25’ in size on Cottageville Highway (US Hwy 17-A) was heavily damaged in an afternoon fire Saturday, January 27, 2024. The occupants were at home when the fire occurred and advised they heard a pop, and the dogs began barking. Upon investigation, they found the garage on fire. Fire-Rescue units arrived quickly and deployed several handlines to the building. Two exposures also received damage as radiant heat melted the siding off of a doublewide mobile home next the garage and damaged a second storage building located behind the garage. Firefighters had the fire under control in about 15 minutes and were on the scene for 1-1/2 hours performing overhaul. No fire entered the adjoining mobile home or storage building. Several small LP tanks inside the garage vented. The homeowner turned off the larger LP tank in the yard. It appears the fire originated in the area of an electric golf cart.  The building suffered substantial damage and the contents were destroyed. No injuries were reported during the incident.
