Spiritual Depression?

Posted

Reading the Bible through with me? Then grab your pen and journal and read 1 King's 19-22. There is no question that Elijah's prophetic ministry has been powerful and effective up to this point. You might think the crescendo was his victory at Mt. Carmel. But after running back to Jezreel, he received a threatening message from Jezebel (19:1-2). Elijah's response to that threat was to run, hide and pray for death. THIS WAS ELIJAH! The same one who would appear with Moses and the Lord Jesus at the Transfiguration. What happened to the courageous prophet of Carmel? It is more common than you think. Some label it as spiritual depression. AKA burnout. After he prays for death, Elijah lays down and sleeps. Then Yahweh provided him with food and water and more sleep. Then more food and water and a 40-day journey to the mountain of God where he hid in a cave. It was there that Yahweh renewed Elijah's call. "Why are you here?" Remember, Yahweh never asks questions for information. His questions are to help us confront issues in our own lives. Elijah thought the victory at Carmel would spur a great revival. It did not. He thought he was alone in his commitment to Yahweh. He was exhausted, frustrated, and ready to quit. Then Yahweh sent three spectacular phenomena: a mighty, rock-shearing wind, an earthquake, and a fire. But Yahweh wasn't in any of those spectacular things. But after them, in the stillness, Elijah heard the still, small voice of Yahweh. It was a reminder for all who long to see Yahweh God in spectacular ways. We are more likely to experience Him in stillness when we are actively listening for His voice. Is there any wonder why the psalmist would write "Be still and know that I am God."? (Ps. 46:10). The best translation of those first two words is “stop struggling.” God did not even address Elijah's complaint or his blaming of other people. He just renewed His call for Elijah to finish well. In the stillness of that moment, Elijah heard the voice of God. Do you ever fall into spiritual depression? Recognize and own it! Get adequate rest and exercise. But do not forget get still in God's presence with a prayer journal, His word, and a good devotional guide or two, and listen until you hear His voice.
