The USC Salkehatchie men’s basketball team had its magical March run come to a close in the first round of the NJCAA National Tournament. Salkehatchie would fall to host team Hutchinson Community College, 96-82.
“It’s been a dream come true being able to coach this group this season. We’ve proven that Region 10 once again will go through USC Salkehatchie,” Coach Matt Lynch said. “Getting to Kansas was something we talked about all year. Upon getting there, we are convinced that we belong. We came out ready to play and competed for a full 40 minutes. We are probably 3-4 plays better than what we showed, and ultimately those 3-4 plays are the difference in winning or going home in the national tournament.”
Salkehatchie played in front of packed house in the Hutchinson Sports Arena and was able to jump out to an early lead 11-4. Salk was able to maintain the lead for most of the first half until a late run by Hutchinson would give them their first lead at the half, 50-43.
The second half proved to be the difference as every run by Salkehatchie was followed by a response from Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons would go on to win the game, 96-82. The game would feature all 13 available members of the USC Salkehatchie roster.
USC Salkehatchie finished the 2023-24 season with a 20-14 record and a Region 10 Tournament Championship.
“We are excited about what we have accomplished, but we’re also motivated to go work for more. I hope that the community will come out to show some love when it’s time to raise the newest banner in the Palace,” Lynch said.
