An eight-year old case regarding the death of Stephen Smith has been reclassified as a homicide. Smith was found deceased in Hampton County in a rural area in 2015. Initially Smith’s death was said to be caused by a hit-and-run, but Smith’s family has disputed this finding. During the investigation into the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh new information was obtained concerning Smith’s death, and the case was re-opened in June of 2021. Smith’s mother, in an ongoing campaign to have her son’s death re-examined is “elated” to have her son’s case re-opened.
