Pedestrian killed in hit and run

A Walterboro man was killed recently in a fatal hit and run.

Jackie White, 45, of Walterboro, died from injuries he received after being struck by a car on Industrial Road, near Walterboro, according to Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey. The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10th, at the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Industrial Road.

White was pronounced dead at the scene by the Colleton County Coroner’s Office.

Emergency responders, including firefighter-paramedics and local law enforcement officers, were called to the scene after a 911-caller reported seeing the man lying in the roadway.

Emergency crews who arrived on scene found the man “with no signs of life,” said Barry McRoy, chief of Colleton County Fire-Rescue.

“The man suffered multiple traumatic injuries and firefighter-paramedics determined he had no signs of life,” said McRoy. “The victim was wearing all black clothing, and appeared to have been struck in the travel lane,” he said.

The suspect in this case has not yet been identified.

According to McRoy, White was killed in a hit-and-run: the suspect fled the crime scene. The suspect is believed to have been driving a Honda car, but no other information is available, as of press deadline.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating this crash.

As for the crime scene, Industrial Road was closed for nearly four hours while the S.C. Highway Patrol conducted an investigation into the fatality.
