Passenger Train Strikes Log Truck

Posted

A northbound Amtrak Train collided with the loaded log truck at Weiss Lane Tuesday Morning, October 14th. The log truck pulled into the path of the train at the private crossing and was struck at the rear of the trailer. The trailer received heavy damage and scattered debris along the tracks, blocking the small dirt road. The train’s locomotive received substantial damage, but the train remained on the tracks and safety stopped about 1/3 of a mile north of the collision. None of the 48 people and crew on the train were injured. The truck driver did not sustain any injuries. Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded a large number of resources to the incident, but most of the units were cancelled once it was determined that no one was hurt. Rail traffic was halted on the rail line for over an hour, but the passenger train was able to depart under its own power. Fire-Rescue units were on the scene for two hours.
