Nearer to God

Posted

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

James 4:8

We all need to be closer to God. Yet, instead of intentionally moving closer, our tendency seems to drift unintentionally further away from Him. We stop reading the Bible or taking the time to pray. We skip church. In moments of decision, when we should be considering God’s desires for our lives, we override His will with our own desires. Drifting away doesn’t happen in a day. It happens over time.

This verse tells us that if you want God to be closer to you, you need to take action and move closer to God. Feeling like you need a change is not enough. You’ve got to want God’s nearness in your life so much that you actually do something about it. This could be the most important decision of your life. Taking action to move closer to God won’t make you perfect, but God promises that when we draw closer to Him, He rewards our efforts by coming closer to us. How badly do you need God in your life? Do you want God enough to move closer to Him?

Heavenly Father, I confess that I have drifted away from You. Something in me knows I should be closer to You and I want You in my life. Help me to make a move closer to You. Help me to read my Bible, spend time in prayer, and attend church with other believers. Help me to submit my heart and life to You. Bring my heart to a place where I repent of my sin and believe that Jesus Christ is God. Please be my God, my Lord, and my Father. My hope is in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
