Judge Jean Toal has scheduled an evidentiary hearing regarding Alex Murdaugh’s request for a retrial on Jan. 29. A preliminary hearing has also been scheduled for Jan. 15.
Judge Toal has been assigned to oversee the hearings requested by Murdaugh’s defense team which has claimed that Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill tampered with the jury. They argue this should be grounds for a retrial.
Toal replaces Judge Cliffton Newman who requested to be removed from the case.
Murdaugh is currently serving a two life sentences for killing his wife Maggie and son Paul.
