• What responsibilities come under the purview of County Council? What are the functions of a Councilmember?
Colleton County operates under a Council/Administrator form of government. County Council is the local legislative body governing the county and appoints an administrator to execute the policies, directives, and legislative actions of council I believe every county council member should be a hands on, proactive, community involved leader to make positive informed decisions, council members must listen and understand the issues that face our citizens on a daily basis. This is the kind of council member we need, and I am ready to take on that role.
• In your view, what are the most pressing issues facing our county, and how do you envision addressing these issues collaboratively with other elected officials and community stakeholders?
The growth of Colleton County is a major issue. Summerville, Charleston, and Beaufort are rapidly growing towards Colleton County. Our leaders must plan and have the infrastructure in place to accommodate an increase in population and services. This will take a joint effort between Colleton County and the City of Walterboro to plan and develop new Neighborhood’s, expand water and sewer systems, and attract new businesses and industries.
I will also need to work closely with our school system to improve our quality of education to ensure that all Colleton County Children are educated well. I will work closely with our local youth leaders to identify and solve problems that face our young people and work closely with our small towns to improve safety and services, and instill a stronger sense of pride to our county.
• Economic development is a key priority for our county’s growth. In your view, what are the most pressing economic development issues facing our county?
As a member of the Colleton County Resource and Development Board, one of the main questions ask by prospective companies is “Is there ample housing available for my employees and is there a skilled local workforce?” Colleton County needs new subdivisions and housing. We also need to assist our vocational school with providing more skilled labor education to build a strong workforce so industry will be attracted to Colleton County.
• For the entire county, including Edisto, Cottageville, Lodge, Walterboro, Smoaks, etc, community engagement is crucial for effective governance. How do you plan to engage with residents and solicit their input on important county issues and how do you ensure that diverse voices are heard and considered in the decision making process?
I announced my candidacy for county council in January. Since then, I have attended town council meetings in Lodge, Smoaks, and Williams. I have also attended school board meetings. I wanted to get to know local leaders and understand the issues that they face. I have learned about local issues, and this has prepared me to make informed decisions for our local communities. As an elected official, I will be the voice for our small towns and communities. I am a veteran and lifelong public servant of 33 years. I will continue to honorably serve the citizens of Colleton County.
