A 33-year-old man received multiple injuries after the vehicle he was driving struck and uprooted a large stump in the 4600 block of Ritter Road just west of Ivanhoe Creek.
The Acura sedan was traveling east on Ritter Road when it failed to negotiate a curve. The car left the roadway at a high rate of speed, struck a large stump, which was uprooted and pulled completely out of the ground. The car continued east and struck a small tree, breaking it into several pieces, before coming to rest in the ditch near Ivanhoe Creek.
The location provided by both callers to 9-1-1 was incorrect, and responders were sent to Green Pond Highway about a mile away. When nothing was found on Green Pond Highway, units began searching the area and located the accident on Ritter Road.
Bystanders pulled the male from the car and up the embankment. Firefighter-paramedics began treating the man’s injuries with assistance from the bystanders, who were very helpful. A medical helicopter was requested.
The man flown by C.A.R.E. Flight to the Trauma Center at MUSC.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
