On January 1, 2020, Kim Drawdy and his 9-year-old daughter Lauren were shot and killed in a hunting incident. SCDNR identified Sean Peterson as the shooter and he was charged with two counts of negligent use of a firearm while hunting. At the time of the incident, SCDNR said that Peterson fired into bushes without properly determining what his target was.

In an emotionally tense sentencing, Peterson pled guilty to the charges. Kim and Lauren Drawdy’s family mourned the loss of their loved ones and the things they would never be able to do with them. Peterson expressed remorse addressing Drawdy’s family telling them it was not intentional and that he would take it back if possible. Peterson was sentenced to 5 years in prison and 4 years of probation on Monday, June 10, 2024.
