A Walterboro gardening club has re-bedded a flower bed at the Colleton County Memorial Library.

The Mayfield Garden Club recently did the work to the library’s flower bed, adding a Pollinator Garden for the Monarch Butterfly to the library’s flower bed.

“The flowers are just beautiful,” said Shiela Keaise, children’s librarian for the Colleton County Memorial Library in Walterboro. “These lovely ladies’ primary goal is to address environmental concerns and to beautify our community of Walterboro.”

According to Keaise, the Mayfield Garden Club is under the leadership of Judy Cannon. There are more than 20 members on the garden club; however, only about 12 members are currently active due to COVID-19, said Keaise.

The club was organized in 1948, and the Mayfield Garden club was sponsored by the Walterboro Garden Club and one year later became state federated. “They are members of the Garden Club of South Carolina and the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc.,” she said. “The Mayfield Garden Club came together to help promote and protect our environment by planting a Pollinator Garden specifically for the Monarch Butterfly outside the Children’s Department at the Colleton County Memorial Library. The monarch butterfly is one of the most recognizable and well-studied butterflies on the planet,” she said. “It has orange wings that are laced with black lines and bordered with white dots. Don’t look for them in the winter though, they migrate to California and Mexico.

“Thank youm Mayfield Garden Club, for making our community beautiful!” said Keaise
